Social media apparently has been a great muse for me lately! Here is another song born out of a Facebook post.
Shortly after our quarantines began, a dear friend of mine (who also happens to be the father of a dear friend of mine – go figure. BUT, I tell you this, because the dear friend of mine that is the son of a dear friend of mine in this scenario happens to be the Tony from “Tony Wanted to Make a Record” – so we have the connection. Nice eh?
Anyway – this dear friend of mine/father of my dear friend of mine posted something about the poor treatment of our front-line workers. My dear friend’s daughter-in-law (who happens to be my dear friend’s wife – not as weird as it sounds if you are still following me) commented about how her daughter – my dear friend’s granddaughter had experienced this mis-treatment first-hand as a grocery store worker – even witnessed someone punch one of her co-workers! PEOPLE! What the what???
Anyway, my dear friend just commented back, directing it toward his granddaughter, “My love, be safe. Be brave. But most of all be safe” ….
His words stuck with me for a while, and this lovely song came out. I dedicate this to all the front-line workers– this is for you. Be safe, be brave, but most of all be safe…
Anna sang on this one also. She really can sing; I love recording with her. There was supposed to be a slew of live shows with her – but COVID… In due time…
Steve Kelzer played the sweet piano part, which became the featured instrument. I love it so much. He also did the cool strings on this one. David Falbo mentioned, “I play flugelhorn, have an idea”. I said, “What the F is a flugelhorn, but YES”. It really made this track shine…
lyrics
I read in the headlines today
They sent my granddaughter off to war
But it wasn't the war of yesterday
This isn't what she signed up
She told me, "Grandpa you'd never believe
What some people do and say
At any given moment I wanna leave
But I show up anyway"
So I tell her
“My love...
“Be gentle, be kind
Leave all the bad things behind you
Be safe, be brave
But most of all, my love
Be safe…”
And my sister, she’s still fightin'
At the county hospital
So many lives in the balance
The front line is never dull
She says, "Brother you'd never believe
The conditions I'm workin' in
At any given moment I wanna leave
But if I did who would step in?”
